For all the grief the NCAA selection committee took in announcing the 2007 tourney field, it sure nailed the rankings in the West Region.
All four top seeds managed to make their way to San Jose while No. 11 Virginia Commonwealth provided the only upset with an opening-round defeat of No. 11 Duke. Higher-ranked teams went 8-4 against the spread over the first two rounds.
With no Cinderellas in the mix, one would think that both Sweet 16 games in the West set up as close affairs, but oddsmakers disagree. The No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks are big 9-point favorites over the No. 4 Southern Illinois Salukis in the first game on Thursday.
No. 2 UCLA and No. 3 Pitt are apparently more closely matched. The Bruins are favored by 3.5-points over the Panthers in Thursday’s second game.
Do the oddsmakers have it right?
